Riff, 2 x 9 feet, pastel, not yet finished.

Here is an experiment in abstract pastel. The colors are very untrue to the painting...

Half Dome from Olmstead Point

Half Done from Olmstead Point, pastel, available.

I started this painting on a trip to yosemite with my painting friend, Cynthia, in the winter, but were were snowed out before I could finish it. I just sorted out the photos from that trip and finished the painting. I like the silvery light that heralds impending snow that was somehow preserved in the painting.

Portrait of Wouter

Portrait of Wouter, pastel, nfs.

I did this portrait in too little time for a true likeness. This is a 25 minute study that reminds of the importance of attention to drawing and proportion. If I had drawn first, I would have a painting with a better resemblence to the subject.

New Studio!

Photo of my new studio!

I just rented a small studio near my home where I can do larger works and hold classes. I have found that I really enjoy working there after only one week of residency.

Purissima Colors, 11x14 inches, pastel, available.
Here is a painting that I completed this morning while painting with POPs in Half Moon Bay.
I love the color harmony between the willows, the base of the tree and the blue road.

Farm House Sketch, 11x14 inches, pastel, available.
I joined the Peninsula Outdoor Painters for some plein air paintings today. Here is a very rapid color study I did of the farm house on Purissima Canyon Road in Half Moon Bay.

2007 Self Portrait, 11x14 inches, pastel, nfs.
I try to do at least one self-portrait per year. This portrait it the first painting I have done in my new Studio! I am renting a small space to do work in!
As you can see from the portrait, there is a need for better lighting in the studio--it is on the way.

Evening in Inverness, 11x14 inches, pastel, available.
Here is another painting that I completed on a painting day in Point Reyes National Seashore. The shore of bay has many of these stilt houses standing in calm water. This painting is done in a splash during the last light of the day.
Willows in Spring, 11x14 inches, pastel, available.

Today, I joined the Peninsula Outdoor Painters in Half Moon Bay for a breezy and cold painting session. I focused on working with rich color to compensate for the dull light.

Inverness Afternoon, 11x14 inches, pastel, available.

I travel up to visit my gallery in Point Reyes Station for the day on Monday. My paint buddy Cathy and I went out into the lovely light to paint before driving back to the bay area. I always enjoy painting this scene, whatever the time of day.
